Comparison of methods of determining liquid and plastic limits of selected Laguna [Philippines]soils

The liquid limit is the water content at which a cohesive soil stops behaving as a solid material and begins to react like a liquid. The plastic limit is the water content at which the soil passes from the plastic state to semi-solid condition. These two values define the plasticity index over which the soil behaves plastically. In this study, the liquid and plastic limits of selected Laguna soils were determined to make comparative evaluation of the Casagrande and the drop-cone methods of determining liquid limits, and the traditional thread rolling and the drop-cone methods of determining plastic limits. For liquid limit, results showed that the correlation coefficients of the fall cone data are higher than those from the Casagrande method. Also, data showed that the values obtained by the fall cone method were generally higher than those determined by the Casagrande method. The difference appeared higher by about 4 units at liquid limits values of below 50 but reduced to about 2 units as liquid limits increased to 60. For plastic limit, analyses of the same drop-cone data by the log-log relationship of water content and depth of cone penetration gave plastic limit values which are at most 30% different from the plastic limit values obtained using traditional thread rolling technique. The study proposes for more investigation on the use of the various laboratory methods of determining the two Atterberg limits as applied to local conditions for better understanding of Philippine soils and possible standardization of measurement technique.
