Factors influencing the information-sharing behavior of agricultural extension workers (AEWs) on the use of bio-N in the Bicol, Region, Philippines

This study was conducted to understand the information-sharing behavior of AEWs and determine the factors that predispose them to share information on Bio-N. Under the Ginintuang Masaganang Ani (GMA) Corn Program of the Department of Agriculture, Bio-N aims to drastically enhance plant growth, reduce the Nitrogen requirement of corn and production cost, increase corn yield and protect the environment. The respondents were 54 AEWs implementing the corn program in corn cluster areas in Bicol. Socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge creation traits and personal concerns were described and tested for relationship with information-sharing behavior. Findings revealed that the respondents were all aware of the Bio-N technology. Individual perception scores showed that more than half of them were generally ambivalent about Bio-N. However, 42.59 percent agreed and strongly agreed with it. Their overall weighted perception score of 3.34 revealed that they were generally not sure about the technology. Sex, civil status, area, post-graduate studies and monthly income showed significant relationship with information-sharing behavior. Attendance to trainings, perception scores and job satisfaction had the most number of significant relationships with information-sharing behavior, underscoring the importance of substantial trainings and the need to address knowledge gaps as well as job-related issues.
