Efficient nitrogen removal from wastewater is one of the most important problems of modern wastewater treatment technology. To achieve this goal it is necessary to possess knowledge about the microbiological basis of nitrogen compounds conversions in activated sludge. In recent years a range of new microbial processes and technological process applications concerning nitrogen removal have been studied. The review summarizes the knowledge about genes, enzymes and enzymatic pathways involved in inorganic nitrogen changes in activated sludge
