Preserving, protecting, and conserving Lake Pinamaloy in Don Carlos, Bukidnon [Philippines]

Lake Pinamaloy, a 60-ha inland body of water located in Don Carlos, Bukidnon, plays a vital role in providing life support system to people within its vicinity. The lake is not only the community's main source of potable water for domestic use, but also serves other purposes such as utility by academic institutions for research, as tourism site, maintenance of the ecological balance of the area, and aesthetic appeal. Because of its importance, the LGU [local governement unit] of Don Carlos passed and enforced some ordinance to protect the lake from intrusion or man-made destructions. The signing of the MOU among three Central Mindanao University (CMU) signaled a cooperative effort to protect, preserve, and conserve Lake Pinamaloy, Garin et al. (CMU) led this project. Despite the projects efforts to heighten awareness in the preservation, protection, and conservation of Lake Pinamaloy, the study found that there were issues and concerns that need to be addressed first in order to achieve the sustainable use of the lake. Thus, the Lake Pinamaloy Development Council, made up of members from the different sectors of Don Carlos community, government agencies, NGOs [Non-Government Organizations], business establishments, church organizations, youth, and lay leaders, was formed to address identified concerns and plans for feasible actions to develop the lake in the future.
