Determination of the relationship of calf birth weight to calving ease and pelvic index of cows

Data on 1290 Black-and-White first calves and cows from the Experimental Stations of the National Research Institute of Animal Production from the years 2001-2005 were investigated. The experimental animals had at least 75 percent Holstein-Friesian breeding. The birth weight of calves was found to have no statistically significant effect on calving ease, with correlations ranging from r = 0.03 to r = 0.07. The present study showed that an increase in the pelvic index was related to a decrease in the number of difficult births: the larger the pelvic area, the easier the calving. It was also found that the body weight of the analysed calves affected the pelvic index only slightly (r = 0.13) but had a highly significant effect (r = 0.32) on pelvic capacity. Relationships were found between calf body weight and the value of the WW, SWK and SWB indices. The negative coefficients of correlation obtained show that the increase in calf body weight is paralleled by a decrease in the indices analysed. The body weight of calves has an effect on increases in the width of pins and mean pelvic length. Calf body weight was not related to the width at hips or the width of thurls
