There are presented results of energetic investigations on the forage harvester during maize plant shredding, at variable number of knives mounted on a knife disc, its rotational speed, specific mass of plants, feeding speed and plant moisture content. Assuming the effective power requirement at tractor PTO as a criterion for energy evaluation of the forage harvester work, it was found that change in the cut length by altering number of knives was more advantageous than by a change in knife disc rotational speed, and an increase in material feeding by increasing the speed was better than by increasing the plant mass. The plant harvesting at recommended moisture content of 65-70 percent needed the least energy inputs
