The paper presents the results of the analysis of the reproductive performance of gilts on a large pig farm in Vojvodina (R. Serbia) of the capacity of about 5,500 sows. Out of total 19,000 female piglets, selected for reproduction, for insemination, at the age of 210 days, 5,420 (28.5%) of gilts are prepared but only 70% are inseminated. Due to the long-lasting pre-insemination anoestrus (estrus was not detected till the age of 9 months), 29.3% of gilts are culled from the reproduction. The assumption is that the main reason for the long-lasting anoestrus lies in the inadequate estrus detection technology on farms (once in 24 hours, with the fence-line contact of a boar teaser with gilts). This drawback results in a considerable economic loss in the piglet production on the studied farm.
