The effects of the size of the vegetation space, determined by the inter-row distance of 50 and 70 cm and the within-row plant distance of 20 and 30 cm, on the yield of the above ground thyme biomass were studied. Two-year trials (2006 and 2007) were set up in two locations in Serbia (Gorobilje - western Serbia and Pancevo - southern Banat). The size of a vegetative space significantly affected the yield of above ground biomass with the inter-row distance of 50 cm and the within-row plant distance of 30 cm over both locations and both years of investigation. The lowest yields were obtained with the inter-row distance of 70 cm and the within-row plant distance of 20 cm over both locations and both years of investigation. The location also significantly affected yields of above ground thyme biomass. Hence, the yield was higher in the location of Pancevo in both years of investigation and in all size variants of the vegetation space than in Gorobilje. The year cannot be considered tha factor as it is known that the thyme is a biennial plant and that it tillers during the second year of its development, hence significantly higher yields were expected in the second year.
