The diagnostic efficacy of EIA and immunodiffusion test (IDT) was studied for investigating blood sera of calves obtained from seropositive cows at leucosis-unsafe farms in the Ivanovo and Vladimir regions with different infectivity level of herds. The influence of calves’ age on the status of virus-specific antibodies detected in EIA is shown: at the age of 1 month in 94% - 58.7-107.3 EU, at 3 months – in 56% of calves – 13.5-24.7 EU and in 44% - exceeded 58.4 EU, at 6 months – 87% had maximum level of antibodies – 94.5-109.2 EU and 25% - 13.224.8 EU. High correlation relationship is found to be the EIA antibody level and the number of positive IDT-responsive calves. The comparison of the number of positive IDT responses with the EIA antibody level has shown that 89% IDT+ responses fell on the samples in which the antibody level exceeded 41 EU, and in 72% was above 90 EU (the average value is 95.2 EU). An analysis of samples with lower content of antibodies to BLV (10-60 EU) IDT appeared to be less effective than EIA. On the basis of the results obtained it is recommended to use IDT only at the 1 stage of anti-epizootic measures. Further, an animal negatively IDT-responded should be studied in EIA and only after the negative result is obtained, it may be regarded as seropositive.
