More people own pets that ever before. Dogs and cats are most popular pets all over the world. Despite the important physical, psychological and social benefits derived from living with a pet the ability to occasionally injury people has made these animals become the focus of a public health and security challenge. Different aspects of responsible pet ownership (choice or selection of animals, socialisation, training, care and welfare, good neighbourliness) many roles of veterinarians in pets welfare and welfare indicators (the number od unwanted healthy animals, the number of non-microchiped pets, the number of euthanased healthy pets , dogs fight etc.) are discussed in the article. International legislation on responsible ownership and welfare of pet animals are discussed, too.
