The influence of Alnus incana on nitrogen nutrition, illumination and growth of Picea abies under their combined planting

The results of 15-year observations of the combined spruce and alder plantations in the southern taiga subzone (the Yaroslavl Region) on laylands (wood sorrel-bilberry birch forest on the weakly sandy-loamy soddy-podzolic soil) showed that the alder falloff improved the nitrogen nutrition of spruce to a greater extent. Two cultures stroke roots well after their combined planting. According to the scheme applied, in 4-5 years after the planting of the cultures, a necessity to control the number of alder trees by cutting appeared, since this species upon growing disturbs the light regime of spruce and decreases its increment. For the successful biological amelioration of soil, optimal nitrogen nutrition of spruce and its growth, the distance between the rows upon planting of alder should be not smaller than 5 m. As alder trees grow, partial felling should be performed in proper time taking into account the growth of spruce and the nitrogen content in its needles
