Wheat grain yield on Mukabrab soil series as affected by disc ploughing, chiseling, farm yard mannure and nitrogen

This study was executed at the eastern extension of Hudeiba Research Station farm on the high terrace soils of the River Nile State for two consecutive seasons (2003/04 and 2004/05). The soil of this extension belongs to the Aridisols order and was correlated to Mukabrab soil series. The studied different cultural practices included two methods of land preparation, viz: disc plough alone or coupled with chiseling in combination with three rates of nitrogen (0, 43 and 86 kg N/ha). Fifteen tons of farm yard manure (FYM) per hectare was applied to each of the land preparation methods except for the control. The total number of treatments was nine as described below: - Disc Ploughing + 0 N (Control) . Disc Ploughing + 43 kg N/ha . Disc Ploughing + 86 kg N/ha . Disc Ploughing + 15 tons FMY/ha+ 0 N . Disc Ploughing + 15 tons FYM/ha + 43 kg N/ha . Disc Ploughing + 15 tons FYM/ha + 86 kg N/ha . Chiseling + Disc Ploughing + 15 tons FYM/ha + 0 N . Chiseling + Disc Ploughing +15 tons FYM/ha + 43 N/ha . Chiseling + Disc Ploughing + 15 tons FYM/ha + 86 N/ha. The treatments were arranged in split plot design with four replications. These treatments were arranged in a split plot design replicated four times. The results of this study indicated highly significant effect of both nitrogen and the FYM on wheat grain yield and the studied yield parameters viz: plant height, length of spike, number of seeds per head and the 1000 seed weight. The combined yield analysis of the two seasons revealed that the treatment consisted of chiseling + disc plough + 15 tons FYM/ha + 86kg N/ha was the best for wheat production in the high terrace soils. This treatment gave the highest wheat grain yield (2048kg/ha), but the difference in grain yield between this treatment and of that consisted of discing + 15 tone FYM/ha + 86 kg N/ha was not statistically significant. Also the addition of the FYM invariably resulted in reduction of the soil bulk density and hence an increase in soil holding capacity
