Molecular diversity of striga hermonthica collected from different locations and host plant species

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was applied to asses the variability in collections of 10 samples of Striga hermonthica from different sorghum, millet and maize fields a cross different locations in Sudan, in addition to one sample from Kenya. Amplification products were obtained from 11 of 20 primers used. The number of amplified bands for each primer ranged from 3 to 8. A total of 47 bands were produced of which 22 showed polymorphism among the 11 Striga collections. Cluster analysis divided the collection into 4 different groups with similarity ranging between 85 to 95%. The Striga from maize in Kenya uniquely placed in a separate group with about 70% similarity to the collections from Sudan. There was no specific pattern of grouping among the 8 collections from sorghum fields in Sudan. The study provided evidence for molecular variability in Striga collected from different regions and from the three host species which will contribute to further studies for understanding of host specificity of Striga
