Possible sources of silage contamination with mycotoxins were reviewed and some data on the appearance of Fusarium moulds in maize in Slovenia is given. In our climate the main mycotoxin producing mould on fields is Fusarium. Wide variation in infestation of maize with this mould has been observed between locations and years. On the basis of American experience it was pointed out that, due to climate change, aflatoxine producing Aspergillus flavus might cause problems in the future. In silage making the most widespread mould is Penicilliun roqueforti. Based on our own results and the results from literature it was concluded that high concentration of residual sugars in maize silages may be one of the most important factors responsible for aerobic deterioration of silage.
