Due to the higher milk performances of dairy cows in the past years higher energy and nutrient concentrations for silages are demanded increasingly. The present study based on about 9000 silages analysed at the state institute of agricultural chemistry from the university of Hohenheim in the years 1995 until 2004 compares the silages in their average crude nutrients, energy and mineral values. It was not possible to observe a continuous development of the silages towards higher energy concentration combined with decreasing crude fibre contents, but specific years differ significantly in almost all crude nutrient contents from the other years like the first cut of 1999 or the following cuts of 2003. Extreme climatic conditions like the big rainfalls in 1999 or the droughty in the summer of 2003. The comparison of the cuts within the single years shows with few exceptions significant higher energy-, nXP-,crude fibre-and potassium contents and significant lower dry matter-, crude ash-, calcium-, magnesium-, manganese and copper values for the first cut .
