This paper reports on indirect benefits of mangrove plantations at Yeesarn Sub-District, Samut Songkram Province. Data collected on mangrove crab (Sesarma mederi) collecting were done by interviewing crab middlemen, crab collectors and mangrove plantation owners in addition to direct observation of crab collecting in order to integrate the knowledge with the dimension of economy, social, culture and the mangrove plantation ecosystem. The results indicated that the mangrove plantations which mainly planted for charcoal production has generated indirect benefits in mangrove crab collecting to local residents. At the timeof data collecting, there were about 33 crab collectors in Kao Yeesarn and Ton Lampaen villages, supplying crabs to four middlemen. The total value of mangrove crab being bought was approximately Baht 1,438,600/year. From the interviews, the number of mangrove crab was continually decreasing due to the change in land use of mangrove plantation. Also, there are no rules for crab collecting in this open-access mangrove plantation. Crab collectors could generally use bait traps at any mangrove plantations without any ban from the plantation owners as it has long been traditional practice. Additionally, the lack of awareness of all stakeholders in regard to the importance and the proper management of mangrove crab conservation for the sustainable use was an issue. Without appropriate management, the fertility of the mangrove ecosystem could be damaged and the indirect benefits in mangrove crab collecting from mangrove plantations in Yeesarn community could be depleted and gone.
