Maternal variance of taits characterizing body development of weaned Arabian foals
2009
Sabeva, I., Agricultural Institute, Shumen (Bulgaria)
The following traits were subject to study: height at withers, height at back, height at croup, body length, chest depth, chest width, chest girth, and cannon girth of 194 weaned Arabian foals, born during the last two generation intervals at the Kabiuk Stud. The variance analyses were done by mixed model methodology. Restricted Maximum Likelihood estimates of the variance components were computed by iterative MINQUE procedure - Harvey, 1990. The factors containing the maternal effects had decisive inluence on he genetic diverstty of body measurements in weaned foals. The influence of the genealogical groups and mother's individual effect were not significant only with respect to chest width. The variability which is due to environmental variance had relatively constant value regardless of the combination of genetic sources ofvariability used in the statistical models. Mothers influence during the early postnatal period in Arabian horses was from 5 to 32 % of the total variance of traits.
