A relationship between the index of infestation of Acanthoscelides obtectus Say and some morphological, physical and chemical characteristics of common bean seeds was investigated. Laboratory tests with seeds from four varieties and two lines were performed for determination of the index of infestation. Seed weight, peel thickness, yield point, elasticity modulus and rupture point as well as total sugars, starch, tannins and thripsin inhibitors were measured. It was established a genotype reaction to bean weevil infestation. The highest index of infestation was read in Bulgarian variety Starozagorski cher (21.5%) whereas the lowest one was in line XAN 159 (4.0%). The data analysis shows that the bean weevil seems to prefer seeds of bigger sizes, not too sweet, with peel that is more elastic. Development of varieties possessed seeds of smaller size could be one of the methods with ecological effect on the control of Acanthoscelides obtectus Say in common bean.
