Study of methods of defoliation and drying of sesame plants was carried out in the period 2004 – 2006. Assessment of the quality of threshing was made by defining the rate of threshed and unthreshed pods of the hopper mass. Trials were threshed with Wintersteiger plot combine harvester with cylinder speed set at 1200 rpm and distance between drum and counter-drum of 0,5 см at input and 4 см at output. As results were analyzed it became clear that best output minimum loss of seeds, with good quality threshing was obtained when termination of sesame vegetation one week after the end of flowering occurred, by having sesame mowed. When vegetation is terminated one week prior to the end of flowering we have a great loss of seeds. Reglone applied one week after the end of flowering also leads to a great loss of seeds. Choice of a method of gathering 1-phase or 2-phase depends on the specific autumn weather conditions and the available gathering machinery. In case of a dry and warm autumn with a combine harvester supplied with pick-up equipment it is recommended that sesame is gathered in two-phase manner. Whereas one-phase gathering is more appropriate when frequent showers prevail in the autumn.
