Influence of thinning methods on yield, bunch morphology, grey and sour rot, and wine quality of Pinot noir | Influences des techniques d'éclaircissage sur le rendement, la morphologie des grappes, la pourriture et la qualité des vins de Pinot noir

Different manual or chemical yield regulation methods have been investigated on the cultivar Pinot noir (clone RAC 12) at the research station Agroscope Changins-WädenswilACWin Changins, Nyon (VD, Switzerland) during four years (2005-2008).The suppression of whole or half bunches was compared with increasing doses of gibberellin (GA3). Application of GA3 during bloom from 10 to 100 ppm, as well as half bunch sectioning allowed a significant reduction of grey and sour rot. The efficacy against Botrytis of these methods was better than the application of two specific fungicides at bunch closure and ripening. The use of GA3 induces bunch thinning, particularly at 50 and 100 ppm. GA3 did not influence bunch fertility of the next years, independently of the dosage. A significant yield reduction could only be observed at both higher GA3 concentrations. No effect could be observed on shoots growth, or vigour; wines composition was not different and equally appreciate by thewine tester panel.
