The concept of an Observatory of the forest ecosystem in canton Vaud has established itself in the course of a period marked by rapid technical progress and social change whereby the forest has become a multifunctional public amenity. This process has greatly enhanced knowledge of the flora and promoted information concerning the site, all of which has enriched the forestry data bank. The interpretation of this information opens up a vast new field of application in the provision of facilities and in forest management, as reflected in several concrete examples proposed in this special edition of the Swiss Forestry Journal.
