The distribution of single and multiple births obtained from ewes heterozygous for the mutation FecXR in three different flocks of Rasa Aragonesa sheep breed is studied. In all cases, the existence of the mutation was ignored by the managers. The proportion of births producing three or more lambs was significantly increased in all cases. While these births were 1.6%, 2.4% and 2.2% among the wild-type ewes in each flock, the proportion increased to 39.1%, 13.2% and 23.3% respectively among the females bearing FecXR. Such a wide range suggest the need for a strict technical control of the management factors affecting prolificacy in the different flocks (hormone treatments, etc) whenever the existence of the FecXR mutation is detected or suspected. In this way, the possible undesired effects could be minimized. The most important among them is sterility in FecXR/FecXR homozygous ewes.
