The fertility restorative ability of cowpea is critically reviewed with regard to the nature of the crop, excretion of fixed N by intact plants, distribution of fixed N in various plant parts, and factors affecting efficiency of N fixation. Areas for future research are indicated and suggestions to improve N fixing efficiency of cowpeas are included.
