Investigations were carried out at Nyankpala in the guinea savanna and at Kwadaso in the forest zone of Ghana in two growing seasons on the effects of staking, fertilizer application and spacing on seed yam yields of white yam, Dioscorea rotundata. Staking produced more tubers of larger sizes at topping, higher seed yam and, hence, higher total yam yields than no staking. At Nyankpala, staking (compared to no staking) gave a 34 per cent increase in total yam yield while it produced 17-18 per cent increase at Kwadaso. Staking tended to increase the number and size of seed yams. At Nyankpala, staking interacted significantly with spacing for tuber yield at topping, seed yam yield and total yam yield. Fertilizer did not give significant effects on seed yam yields. A 1.2 m x 1.2 m spacing appeared to give reasonable size and yields of seed yams and tuber yield at topping. Original
