Optimum leaf area index for crop growth rate has been described for some crops, but there appears to be some disagreement on the existence of such an optimum in maize. An experiment was carried out to find an optimum leaf area index for crop growth rate in two maize hybrids, Kelvedon 75A and Anjou 210. A wide range of leaf area indices was obtained by establishing six plant populations. Crop growth rate rose with increase in leaf area index up to 12'9 in Anjou 210 and 10_3 in Kelvedon 75A. Optimum leaf area index was not obtained in the two varieties. Differences in the results obtained by various workers were explained in terms of differences in environmental factors.
