A growth analysis was carried out on two tomato varieties(UVF and 1402V) at lbadan, Western Nigeria. At peak leaf area, leaf area indices were 3.1 Md 2.4 for UVF and 1402V respectively. Total dry weight of above ground parts was also higher in UVF than in 1402 V at every sampling period. However, 1402 V had a higher harvest index than UVF, the values being 24 and 12% respectively. The experiment indicated that UVF produced fewer flowers and consequently fewer fruits than 1102-V indicating limtted sink sites in relation to its photosynthate producing potential. It was suggested therefore that the ability to produce a large number of flowers and tolerance to night temperatures to ensure a faitly high degree of fruit set might be a useful selection index for improving the yields of tomato.
