Reciprocal grafts were made between day-sensitive and day-neutral varieties of cowpea. The purpose was to investigate theinfluence of rootstock on flowering responseof the scions and their progenies to day length changes. The experiments were performed at Ibadan between December and February when average day-length was 11.40h and between May and July when average day-length was 12.25 h. Flowering was slightly delayed by thep eriod required for graft establishment; Allday-neutral scions produced flowers under both photo-period conditions irrespective of whether the root-stock was from day-sensitive or neutral plants. Day-sensitive scions onlyflowered during short days and not duringlong days irrespective of whether their root stocks were from day-sensitive or neutralplants. Similar observations were recorded for all the progenies from the day-sensitive or neutral scions. It may thus be concluded that the factor conditioning day-length response in cowpea is most probably not synthesized in roots or stems but somewhere in the leafy shoot.
