Two field experiments wcre conducted bctwccn 1989 and 1991, in the derivcd savanna environmcnt of southcastern Nigeria to study the elrects of staking, nitrogcn fcrtilizcr ratcs (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 kg N/hal on sced yield of yambcan. The number of pods pcr plant, sccd wcight and sccd yield were signilicantly highcr in staked than in unstakcd yambcan. Thc number of pods pcr plant and sccd yicld wcrc also significantly incrcascd by incrcasing nitrogcn ratc Irom 0 to 50 kg N/ha. Phosphorus appl ication, similarly, incrcascd thc numbcr of pods pcr plant and secd yicld as thc ratc incrcascd from 0 to 40 kg P,O/ha. Intcractions bctwccn nitrogcn and phosphorus significantly influcnccd sccd yicld with optimum sccd yield obtaincd whcn thc crop was stakcd and Ii:rtilizcd at 50 kg Nlha and 40 kg ",o/ha
