Morophological and nutritional genetics diversity in hybrid derivatives of multi cut sorghum

Seventeen superior non segregating hybrid derivatives grown along with check SSG 59-3 were evaluated for nutritional and morphological traits along with fodder yield and availability index values. Samples were collected at 60 days after sowing (first cut) and 55 days after first harvest (second cut). Mean CP contents of genotypes were higher in second (12.33) than first cut (10.21 %), cell wall fractions (NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin) accumulation was less in second (61.52,31.27,26.13 and 3.92) than first cut (63.44, 43.92, 30.46 and 4.66%). Sugar, as brix (%) was more in second (11.30) than first cut (7.44%). Mean sugar contents of hybrids were lower at both the cuts (7.44 and 11.3) than check (12.0 and 17.5%). Availability index values were 2.5 units more for genotypes in second cut than first stage of crop harvest. Number of leaves and leaf length was mote in first (11.17 and 90.68) than second cut (9.64 and 66.25 em.). Plant height and leaf width of hybrids was more in second (136.58 and 6.95) compared to first cut (107.17 and 6.76). Green and dry fodder yield was significantly higher in first than second cut. Average in sacco DM degradability was more in second (65.6) vis-a-vis first (64.4%) cut. Results revealed that there was increase in CP, sugar contents and availability index values; while reduction in cell wall contents and forage yield in second over first cut. Hybrid derivatives were superior in yield and low in sugar contents than check (SSG59-3).
