According to the universal agreements on omitting Mercury from all industries especially in Battery manufacturing and nomination the year 2001 as "Mercury and Cadmium Free Year", a lot of researches have been done in FERC to omit the mercury from zinc electrodes of Zinc-Silver oxide batteries and find a suitable substitute for it. Almost 3 to 6 percents of mercury are added to the zinc electrodes for reducing the amount of hydrogen and oxygen evolution during charge and discharge cycles. In this process mercury makes the hydrogen and oxygen evolve at higher potential by increasing polarization or over potential of the anodic and cathodic hydrogen and oxygen generated reactions. Therefore, the anodic active materials will have the chance to react. Mercury has highest over potential of hydrogen-generated reactions in alkaline solutions. Lead, cadmium and tin can be used instead of this metal. In this article two possible substitutes for mercury, lead and tin, were completely conducted and finally one of the lead oxides was accepted as the suitable substitute for mercury.
