The investigation of antibacterial effects of Silybum marianum extract.

Silybum marianum has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. Antimicrobial components with herbal origin are known for it's potential treatments. Aim of this study was in vitro assessment of antimicrobial effects of methanolic extract from dried fruits of Silybum marianum. Hungarian seeds of Silybum marianum were defatted by ethyl acetate. The flavonolignans were extracted with methanol. Antimicrobial effects of different dilution of methanolic extract (1000, 500, 250, 125 and 62.5 mg ml-1) were examined on seven species of microorganisms with three methods including disk diffuasion, well diffusion, porpelite method (as full can growth and table growth methods). According to results of this investigation, the extract had antibacterial effect on Bacillus Cereus, Bacillos Antracis and Streptococcus Pyogenes and no effect on Staphilcoccus aureus, Enterococcus Faecalis, Psodomonas Aeroginosa and Escherichia Coli. With attention to our finding, it is concluded methanolic extract of Silybum marianum has antibacterial effects on a number of current clinical pathogens microorganisms and it must be evaluated in vivo and clinically.
