This study was to investigate agricultural characteristics between the functional genetically modified (GM) Chinese cabbage and its control(non-GM) grown in the central districts of Korea in order to establish the evaluating protocol and standard assessment for the GM Chinese cabbage. The collected data was analyzed to compare each characteristic between GM and the control Chinese cabbage grown in the dense or normal planting. Difference in the horticultural characteristic between GM and the control Chinese cabbage was not found during the seeding stage. However, there were few differences found in some of the agricultural characteristics during the growth period. In the dense planting, there was no significant difference between GM and the control Chinese cabbages except three items out of 24 agricultural characteristics. On the other hand, seven items were slightly different between GM and the control Chinese cabbage in the normal planting. From the leave characteristics, inner leaves were found in both GM and the control Chinese cabbage grown in the normal planting, but not in the dense planting. In the dense planting, the number of outer leaves in the control was more than the number of outer leaves in GM Chinese cabbage, but he number of outer leaves in GM Chinese cabbage was greater in the normal planting. There was no difference found in the weight of harvest organ between GM Chinese cabbage and the control grown in both plantings, but the average weight of Chinese cabbage from the normal planting was four times heavier than the average weight of Chinese cabbage from the dense planting. Moreover, a slight difference in the root characteristics between GM and the control was found in the normal planting, but not in the dense planting, Nevertheless, there were no significant differences found in between the functional GM Chinese cabbage and ins control either in dense planting or in normal planting in terms of agricultural characteristics.
