It is important to understand the formation of yield components for obtaining high rape (Brassica napus L.) yields, especially in current intense financial conditions. The aim of our research, started in 2007 at the Research and Study farm Vecauce, was to investigate the yield components of winter rape depending on sowing time (5 dates) and sowing rate (4 rates) for two cultivars. Crop density, number of main branches, mean plant productivity, seed number per plant, seed number per silique, 1000 seed weight were analyzed from rape plant samples (taken from 0.5 square m) at the stage 85-88. Seed yield was checked by direct combining. It was observed that the number of main branches and siliques decreases in later sowing dates (p is less than 0.01). A tendency was observed that decrease of sowing rate increases the number of seeds per silique. Seed yield on earlier and later sowing dates was lower if compared with date which was previously accepted as the optimal. Marked yield compensation mechanism was observed at lower plant density.
