The goals of the research were to evaluate and to compare two dominating pig (Sus scrofa domestica) breeds - Landrace and Yorkshie- reproductive performance in Latvia. Increasing sow productivity is one of the most important objectives in pig selection. Litter size at birth and number born alive has been considered as the most important reproduction traits [1]. Number of piglets produced per sow in one year is an economically important trait in pig production and it is important to increase piglet survival and growth in order to produce a high number of heavy piglets at weaning [2]. Litter size is enough complex traits influenced both by a paternal, maternal and also fetal component. However usually breeding schemes in pig populations only include the maternal component of litter size as fertility trait [3]. Therefore a great emphasis is placed on improving reproduction traits in dam lines. Generally the breeding objective is to increase the number of piglets weaned per sow per year [4].
