The main goal of the Conservation program for farm animal genetic resources is to preserve, protect and reproduce native varieties of agricultural importance in breeding animals. These animals are nationally and internationally recognized as an endangered population. The genetic resources conservation program consists of 5 varieties of domestic animals, which are historically formed Latvian. The Latvian draft horse breed is one of the few preserved populations. The study of the Latvian horse breed genetic resources population was performed from 2004 to 2009, assessing the placement of horses by region, studying the genealogical lines, as well as assessing the population size. 28 breeding stallions and 166 mares of the horse population, which corresponds to the Latvian horse breeding program, were analyzed.
