Evaluation of mulberry (Morus sp.) varieties for growth, yield, and resistance to Fusarium wilt
2008
Angeles, Y.B.
The study was conducted at DMMMSU-SRDI, Bacnotan, La Union to evaluate resistance of 23 mulberry varieties to an isolate Fusarium that presently infects mulberry plants at SRDI and to characterize some horticultural traits of the varieties following inoculation with an isolate of Fusarium pathogen. Fusarium isolate (code: Fusarium sp. SRDI-YABA02) was found to be the wilt pathogen that currently infects the mulberry field of the SRDI. This isolate has distinct morphological features from the other isolate (code: Fusarium sp. SRDI-YABA01). Five varieties among the 23 mulberry accessions were identified as resistant from Fusarium sp. SRDI-YBA02 using both disease incidence and severity as parameters in the nursery as well as in the field. These varieties were Alfonso, Collection 2, Hakkikalu, MA and Ssub3. Varieties that were found susceptble are Batac, Jing-Unlobed, Kanva-2, Kosen, MR2, Papua, SRDC2, Ssub36, Ssub54a and Ssub61. Brazil was the only variety that has shown a moderately resistant reaction to Fusarium in the nursery in the nursery and in the field. Correlation analysis showed that all the horticultural traits evaluated (shoot length, leaf yield, moisture content, number of leaves and root length) were correlated with both disease incidence and severity of Fusarium wilt in the nursery and in the field.
