Effects of compost application and water management on rice and corn under favorable rainfed lowland fields

Dry and wet season experiments were established at PhilRice Batac Experiment Station to evaluate the effects of compost and/or its combination with chemical fertilizers and irrigation schemes on the yield of rice and corn under favorable rainfed conditions. Two factors were considered in the study: irrigation schemes and fertilizer treatments. The irrigation schemes (7 and 14 day interval irrigation for corn and intermittent and rainfed irrigation for rice) were assigned as Factor A. Five fertilizer treatments (no fertilizer, 100% inorganic fertilizer (IF), compost alone at 10 bags/ha, 10 bags compost + 100% IF and, 10 bags compost + 50% IF) were assigned as Factor B. The treatments were laid out in a Strip-Plot Design with three replications. There was no significant yield difference between 7 and 14 days interval of irrigation for corn. Plants irrigated weekly produced 2,432 kg/ha grain yield while every other week irrigation gave a yield of 2,284 kg/ha. In rice, the effect of intermittent and rainfed irrigation practices was comparable due to favorable occurrences of rain water during WS 2008. Both for rice and corn, the application of 10 bags compost + 100% IF and inorganic fertilizer alone (100% IF) produced comparable yields. This indicate that the application of additional 10 bags compost with 100% IF had no effect in one cropping season. Furthermore, the application of 10 bags compost/ha could not compensate for the reduction of chemical fertilizer usage as shown by the significantly lower yield with 10 bags compost + 50% IF.
