Infection of vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae on different crops in Nueva Ecija [Philippines]

A survey of vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) was conducted to identify the prevailing VAM species associated with different crops in Nueva Ecija. An inoculation study was also done using Glomus spp. to identify potential host crops for mass production of endomycorrhizal root inoculant. The fungi were extracted from the rhizosphere soil by wet-sieving and decanting technique. VAM species were identified based on spore characteristics, germ tubes, and auxillary cell formation. Twelve species of VAM were found associated with different crops in the province. The crop and the species identified were as follows: ampalaya (Gigaspora coralloidea, Glomus sp., Glomus fasciculatum, Acaulospora sp.), onion (Glomus fuegianus, G.melanospora, Acaulospora sp., Acaulospora spinosa, Glomus sp.), Eggplant (Gigaspora gigantae, Acaulospora appendiculum, Acaulospora sp.), tomato (Sclerocyptis sp., Gigaspora sp.) and pepper (Glomus fasciculatum, Glomus demorphicum). Results of inoculation showed that among the 20 plant species used in the study, VAM had the highest percentage and fastest rate of root colonization on pole and bush sitao followed by sorghum, onion and yellow corn. Corn has the biggest volume of root biomass while onion and sitao have low root biomass. This shows that corn is still the top crop for mass production of VAM root inoculant. Pechay and mustard produced high plant biomass when inoculated with VAM but they did not form association with mycorrhizae in their roots. However, the presence of VAM in the root rhizosphere or surrounding soil positively improved plants' growth.
