Hydropriming of aged rice seeds to improve germination

Seed priming is an important physiological seed treatment which involves hydration of seeds that allows controlled inbibitions of water. Priming in seeds was being done to improve the speed and synchronization of seed germination. This pre-sowing seed treatment is also being used to improve seed viability and vigor. In this study, twenty traditional rice varieties with varying level of seed quality were used to determine the effect of hydropriming in improving the germinability of aged seeds. Naturally-aged seeds were soaked in water for 12, 24, and 36 h and air-dried for 12 h. The seeds were then germinated in between moistened paper towels and the germination was scored 14 days after sowing. Viability of the unprimed aged seeds varied with germination values ranging from 0 to 95%. Hydropriming improved the germination of aged seeds of 11 of the total germplasm materials tested. An increase in germination of up to 580% was observed in primed seeds compared to the control (unprimed). Longer duration of seed priming did not result to increase in germination in all varieties tested. Fifty percent of the varieties tested showed high germination at 36h priming compared to other duration of priming. Germinability of high quality seeds were not significantly improved by priming.
