Enhancing the value of conserved rice germplasm: open access to International Rice Genebank Information

The T.T. Chang Genetic Resources Center of the International Rice Research Institute holds the largest and the most diverse collection of the world's rice germplasm which are vital in research and breeding programs. To empower the value of these conserved rice germplasm, the information about their diversity should be accessible to the public. At IRRI, the authors maintain a comprehensive system that manages the data of all rice germplasm conserved. The information is shared through a web-based prototype of International Rice Germplasm Information System (IRGCIS) to facilitate searching the database. It allows users to obtain any or all passport, characterization and evaluation data, which is accessible through IRRI's local area network. To extend the information dissemination worldwide, a second prototype web version of IRGIS (http://www.irgcis.irri.org:81/grc/irgcishome.html) has been developed jointly by IRRI and the System-wide Genetic Resources Programme (SGRP) where the user can generate a number of analytical and geographical summaries of the collection as well as detailed germplasm searches. In addition, the International Rice Information System (IRIS) (http://www.iris.irri.org) which is a collaborative project between several centers of the CGIAR, led by IRRI and CIMMYT, contains germplasm identity and passport information on genetic resources and their use in rice improvement. It is intended to make more information available to the public and develop an on-line facility for seed request.
