Dissemination and on-farm benefits of site-specific nutrient management (SSNM) for rice in Iloilo province [Philippines]

Site-specific nutrient management (SSNM) enables farmers to optimally apply nutrients to rice as and when needed by the crop. Results from on-farm experiments across Iloilo Province in 2007 were used to develop a locally adapted SSNM practice ready for wide-scale dissemination to irrigated rice farmers in the province. This SSNM practice was disseminated across 20 municipalities in 2008 through a partnership with the Department of Agriculture, the Province of Iloilo, West Visayas State University, PhilRice, and IRRI. Dissemination was facilitated by the distribution and promotion of a simple 'one-page' management guide, use of the new computer-based Nutrient Manager for Rice decision tool, and field evaluation trials. In on-farm trials across the province, rice yields in the dry season were on average about 1 t/ha higher with SSNM than with the farmer's fertilizer practice. On average, rate of fertilizer P and K were higher with SSNM than with farmer's practice, but rates of fertilizer N were comparable between SSNM and farmer's practice. The main difference between SSNM and farmer's practice was the timing and splitting of fertilizer N applications. Improved nutrient management tailored to local conditions and integrated with other good management practices can dramatically increase the profit of rice farmers in Iloilo.
