Agronomic, morphological and physiological differences of lowland rice grown under system of rice intensification (SRI) and conventional production system using three methods of fertilization

A field experiment was conducted to compare the agronomic, morphological and physiological difference between SRI [system of rice intensification] and conventional rice production system using three methods of fertilization at the Central Experiment Station, UPLB, College Laguna during the dry season (February to May) 2008. The high yields reported in SRI were not obtained in the present study. The conventional system produces the higher yield than SRI. This was attributed to the following: higher total dry matter, leaf area index, shoot dry weight, number of tillers per unit land area and higher weight of 1000 seeds. However, SRI was found to have higher number of leaves on the main culm, shorter phyllochron, higher root pulling resilience and longer roots than the conventional system. Moreover, SRI has longer panicles, higher number of grains and filled grains/panicle but this was not enough to compensate for the higher number of plants per unit area in the conventional system. As regards fertilizer treatment, the combination of organic and inorganic fertilizer and purely in inorganic fertilizer gave the same results in terms of total dry matter production, leaf area index, number of tillers, shoot dry weight, weight of 1000 seeds and overall grain yield which were significantly higher than purely organic fertilizer. Considering modification on SRI principles especially in reducing distance of planting (25 x 25) and the use of combined-organic and inorganic fertilizer could increase rice yield as well as improving the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil.
