The study presents the correlations between the content of Cu and Pb and the numbers of the most important groups of microorganisms. Experiments were carried out in soil samples collected from surface layers of black and grey-brown podzolic soils. Test points were situated in two transects at different distances from the Legnica Copper Smelter (Poland). The analysed soils exhibited uniform soil texture, SiL and slightly more diverse reaction and content of organic matter. A distinct decline in the content of the analysed metals was recorded with the increase of the distance from the emission source. In addition, increases of fungus and actinomycete numbers were recorded in test points more distant from the smelter (1500-2500 m). This regularity was not observed in the case of the total bacterial counts and counts of bacteria from the Azotobacter genus
