For the purposes of this publication, agri-food system encompasses economic and social links between different sets of activities or agents namely, farm based activities (food production, land property), upstream activities or suppliers (agri-technology industries providing machinery, chemicals biotechnology and services for food production as well as suppliers of factors of production such as capital, credit and labour), downstream activities (intermediaries comprising wholesalers, storage, distribution cooperatives, marketing boards and food industries involved in processing packing, manufacturing, distribution, marketing and retailing), food consumption and regulatory environment
