Effect of different cropping technologies on SOM [soil organic matter] in chernozem of semi-arid zone

Effect of different cropping technologies on soil organic matter (SOM) quality and quantity was studied in a long-term experiment in semi-arid steppe of northern Kazakhstan: samplified technology (ST) with no treatments applied, common technology (CT) with 40-cm snow retention, P- fertilizer and herbidices application and intensive technology (IT) and N-fertilizer and herbicides application in wheat monoculture. The reveal the effect of cropping technologies on SOM, carbon and nitrogen mineralization potentials were studied in a laboratory incubation technique. There was found a significant difference in the amount of mineralizable N (Nmin) and C (Cmin) between the cropping technologies that were linearly proportional to the intensity of the applied treatments. The differences in the amount of Nmin and Cmin were attributed to the amount of plant residues returned into the soil. Intensive technology showed the beneficial effect in terms of availability of N for plants that was reflected in higher crop yield. However, there is a concern about the excess mineralization of SOM that may result in depletion of soil fertility.
