The results obtained in this study indicate that hairy cultures of Rubia akane can be a valuable alternative source for the production of anthraquinones. Using exogenous putrescine treatments, relatively high anthraquinone production and improved root growth can be achieved. Further investigations aimed at improving anthraquinone production in hairy root cultures of Rubia akane are in progress at our laboratory.
