Endoscopic examination provides a realistic overview on condition of mucosa of esophagus, stomach, duodenum, rectum and colon, with a possibility of obtaining samples, through biopsy, for histopathology and cytology analysis and endoscope can be used for removal of extraneous bodies from gastrointestinal system. Two types of endoscopes - rigid and flexible - are in use today. The Clinic for Small Animals at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Belgrade (Serbia) uses a video-endoscope of the XION brand, which, in addition to a flexible endoscope of 110 cm in length and 0.9 cm in diameter, includes a camera, a source of light, 14 inch monitor, and a machine for suction and insufflation. Over the past year, we have been able to use this method in our dispensary to diagnose pathologic changes in alimentary system in some fifty dogs of diverse age and sex that we managed to treat successfully.
