The paper presents laboratory standards SRPS, ISO/IEC 17025:2006 (General requirements for the competence of diagnostic and laboratories for application of standards) and SRPS ISO 15189:2008 (Medical laboratories/Special requirements for the quality and competence) as well as the requirements of O.I.E. that are aimed to improve the methods for diagnosing infective diseases in veterinary medicine. Implementation of these standards is presented through diagnostic procedures of most important bacterial and viral diseases in the Republic of Serbia. The paper presents requirements for the referral materials, equipment, necessary premises and staff. Laboratory diagnostics of the following diseases is also described: anthrax, leptospirosis, paratuberculosis, Q fever, chlamydiosis, tuberculosis, mycoplasmosis, brucellosis, listeriosis, pasteurelosis, salmonellosis, clostridiosis, Aujeszky disease, blue tongue disease, rabies, infectious bronchitis, influenza, Newcastle disease, infectious bursal disease, bovine rhinotracheitis, infectious anemia, equine rhinopneumonitis, equine viral arthritis, maedi-visna, classical swine fever and respiratory reproductive disorder of swine.
