Hydromorphology is a new term created for the EU Water Framework Directive implementation. It means the physical characteristics of the shape, the boundaries and the content of a water body. Hydromorphological quality parameters (hydrological regime, river continuity and morphological conditions) are used for the assessment of surface water status/potential. The paper aims to inform expert community on hydromorphology. Namely, introducing of hydromorphological quality as a parameter of water status needs new (at least innovative) attitude which should be a compromise between technical and ecological approach to water management. The paper presents hydromorphological aspects of EU WFD, other EU activities and documents, as well as respective recent activities of Serbian experts within the ICPDR.
