Frequent blackfly biting cases on humans were recorded along the Danube river in the region of Novi Sad (Serbia) in early summer of 2010. Monitoring of adult black flies was performed from the end of May until the beginning of July, during the period of high water level of the Danube river above 450 cm, when mass emergence of Simulium erythrocephalum was expected. The sampling was performed by application of carbon dioxide baited traps positioned in localities along the river banks and in few localities at aerial distance of up to 5 km from the river. Sampling results confirmed the outbreak of Simulium erythrocephalum, the most aggressive anthropophilic black fly of the region. The increasing number of infested localities as well as the increasing average number of females per trap was recorded during the period of monitoring. Females were also recorded by human bite catches. Elevated biting risk to humans by Simulium erythrocephalum was estimated in majority of the prospected localities.
